Getting Organized

March 14, 2016

I always run into an “I have nothing to wear” moment when we are in between seasons and my stand-by outfits don’t entirely work. I’ll find myself standing in front of my closet, hands on my hips, staring at racks full of clothes but coming up with nothing.

I’ve been trying to get myself into a more organized place (key word: trying), so I decided to really take a stab at my closet. I’m not the kind of person who can throw all of my clothes into one heap and KonMari them within one day – I need to do it more gradually than that – so I started today with my jeans drawer. Who knew I had so many pairs??! I’m really proud of the fact that I got rid of 50% of what was in there – donating most but listing a few items on Poshmark, too.

Once I got through that drawer, I felt really motivated. I came up with a system that I think will work (at least, I hope it will!). I’ve tried looking back six months and donating what I didn’t wear, I’ve tried figuring out what I wouldn’t be wearing in the next three months, I’ve tried the hanger trick (where you turn them all backwards and once you wear something turn the hanger the right way again)… But here’s what I’m going to do: I finally went out and bought black velvet hangers, and once I wear something, it goes from the white plastic or green plastic or whatever it’s been on to a black velvet hanger. I’m committing to get rid of anything at the end of the season that doesn’t hang on a black velvet hanger. Then we’ll start over again with the new season’s stuff, moving my clothes from the guest room closet (which serves as our “off season” closet) to my closet racks. And again, at the end of the season when it’s time to switch the closets over, anything that isn’t on a pretty black hanger will just need to go.

My friends and I were talking the other day about how it’s hard to do a closet clean out at the end of a season, since you can’t exactly consign stuff once the season is over. So tell me, how do you handle a closet clean out? Beginning of the season? End of the season? All at once?

I just did a huge closet clean-out in December and it was by far the biggest/toughest one I’ve ever done – but it was so incredibly satisfying! I’m definitely still also having the problem of staring at my closet and feeling like I don’t like anything though…This in-between time of the seasons makes you be so much more creative mixing and matching!

Do you like using poshmark? I still have a huge bag of clothes I’ve been meaning to donate/sell, and I’ve been waiting for a day I can try out something like poshmark! Is it easy to do/worth the effort, or should I just scrap it and donate everything? Thanks!

A big cleanout is definitely satisfying! I’ve used Poshmark for a few items, but it honestly is too much work. Check out Thredup! You can send them everything in a bag, they decide what they want to sell, and everything else gets donated.
