If you’ve ever tried to coordinate outfits for multiple people, you know how daunting of a task it can be. It took me a while to find inspiration for easy family photo outfit ideas with kids. We had family photos taken this past weekend, all in outfits that didn’t completely match but definitely coordinated. Today I’m sharing some inspiration for outfit ideas for families!
These outfits work best for the fall or winter months, and they’re set up to be for a family of four: mom, dad, sister and brother! P.S. If you have a little girl who wears hair bows, this set of velvet bows I found on Amazon is awesome- a whole bunch of bows (10 in all) at an insanely good price!

How to choose outfits for family pictures
Start with your pickiest family member first. Whether it’s your preschooler or husband, you’ll want to pick their outfit first and move on to the next pickiest. For our family, I chose our baby boy as the “pickiest” only because his outfit options were limited. From there, I matched my preschool girl’s outfit, then chose mine, and then added in my husband’s.
Choose a color palette. I wanted family photos – not only for Christmas cards but to hang in our home, too. Because our entire house is decorated in blues (navy and light blue), gray, and white, I wanted our outfits to have colors that coordinated well so I could incorporate these photos into my decor. A few years ago we took photos in a gray and navy striped dress (for me) and an eggplant purple checked shirt (for my husband), and the end result was perfect for hanging in our home. For our family pictures, I chose cream and navy blue, with eggplant purple, black, and camel colored accents.
Look for texture and layers. I add in different textures (think a cable knit sweater vs. a ribbed shirt) and layers to add visual interest. For my preschooler, this meant adding in a teddy bear coat to her outfit. For my husband, we added a v-neck sweater over his collared shirt.
