The one question I get the most about Sprout is what breed he is. To be completely honest, I have no idea, so I always answer "a Texas Special". He was born in a rescue just outside of Houston, one of four (pretty different looking) pups. Of the four puppies, two were white and fluffy and two had straight, caramel-colored fur. Sprout was one of the little white fluffies, and he grew up to have hair that doesn't shed. I wish the other owners had kept in touch with the rescue like we have so I …

Birthday Cake for Sprout
When Sprout turned four this year, I thought it was the perfect time to try to make a dog birthday cake. (Yes, I pretty much treat my dog like a child.) Cake: 1/4 cup peanut butter 1/4 cup vegetable oil 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 tablespoon honey 1 egg 1 cup whole wheat flour 1 teaspoon baking soda Grease a …
4 Years with Sprout
Four years ago today we headed to Logan Airport to pick up our new puppy. I was so excited (and nervous, too). Sprout was four months old when he flew to Boston from Houston. He was one of four puppies born to a momma dog who was picked up as a stray, and I knew he was the one when I saw a video of all of them (my boy was the one who picked up a huge stick and then tripped over it... determined but slightly clumsy, just like me!). The most common question I get is what is Sprout's breed. He …
Lessons From Our Foster Dog
About two months ago, my husband and I picked up Annie, the sweetest shaggy girl to make her way from Tennessee to Boston. We had her for about two weeks when we got great news - she was headed to her forever home! (Sprout was thrilled, because that meant he could take back his normal positions on the couch, in the bed, and glued to my side.)Annie left on a Sunday and I cried, because I had gotten pretty attached to her in that short period of time, but I was thrilled for her new life. But then …
